Irfanview is a small size and fast image viewer for Microsoft windows OS. It supports many image formats.

  • During installation click on “Image Only” to associate image extension to open with irfanview.


  • This is the main interface of Irfanview.


  • File menu options.


  • The “Open” option will open a window that lets you open a image file.  You can see the preview of the image that you want to open. Also some details of the image including Image width, height, file size is shown.


  • The “Thumbnails” options lets you see thumbnails of image files in a directory.


  • The “Slideshow” option can be used to create a slide show of images.
  • Slide advancement lets you set how or at what time interval the next image will be shown.
  • You need to add files in slideshow that will be shown. First select the files/folder which contain the images that you want to be in slideshow. Then click on “add/add all”.
  • Click “Play Slideshow” to start the slideshow.
  • Play mode lets you choose whether slideshow will be played in fullscreen mode or the windowed mode.


  • The “rename” option lets you rename the image file name.


  • The “move file” option lets you move the currently open image file to specified directory. You can save 14 directories where to may choose to move a file.


  • The “Copy file” option lets you copy the currently open image file to specified directory. You can save 14 directories where to may choose to copy a file.


  • The “save picture as” lets you save the currently open image file to separate directory. Also the file name and file type can be changed.


  • You may choose from various file types.



  • The “Edit” menu some useful options.


  • The “show paint dialog” opens this window containing some useful tools. It includes selection, piant brush, eraser, clone tool, text add, line , arrow, ellipse draw, rectangle draw, flood fill, color picker.


  • The “insert text” option lets you insert text in the image. you can change the font, color and size of the text.

  • The “Image” menu has all the image information, resizing, filtering options.


  • The “information option” let you see all the info about the currently open image file.


  • The “rotate left(counter clockwise)” option lets you rotate the image.


  • The “custom/fine rotation angle” lets you rotate the image to specified degree.



  • The 45 degree rotated image.


  • The “flip vertical” option lets you flip the image vertically.


  • You do the flip vertical again and the image returns to original orientation.


  • The “Resize/resample” option is an important one. It lets you resize the image. The current size and the new size is shown.
  • In set new size you can resize the image to required width or height that you input in the provided box. Also you may choose to resize in terms of cm or inches.


  • You may want to resize as percentage of original image.


  • You may want to resize to some standard resolutions


  • You may want to half, double the image size.


  • The “increase/decrease color depth” option lets you increase/decrease image color depth.


  • The color depth decreased to 2. It means only two color which is black and white is present in the image.


  • The “convert to grayscale” option removes the color in the image.


  • The Negative(invert image) -> all channel converts the image into negative.


  • The “color correction” option lets you adjust the image brightness, contrast, color balance, gamma correction and saturation.


  • The new color corrected image.


  • The “Imgae histogram” lets you see the amount of various luminous intensity in the image.  You can see that extreme white and pitch black is less in the image. The mid luminous is what dominates the image.


  • You can see that dark red is less in image. Bright red is in the image.


  •  Not very bright and not dark green dominates the image.


  • You can see the dark blue dominates and is present in the image.


  • There are various effects that can be applied to the image.


  • The “Options” menu


  • The “capture/screenshot” may be very useful when you want to take screenshot.
  • The capture area will tell you what area of the desktop will be captured. Full desktop area will capture the whole desktop of multiple monitors. The desktop area will capture current monitor that is in use. Foreground window will only capture the currently active window.
  • Capture method lets you assign the hot key that will be used to capture the screenshot. In this case every time you press Ctrl+F11 a screenshot will be captured. You may choose take screenshot at regular interval. For that you have to choose “automatic time delay” and input the number of seconds.
  • “After the capture” lets you choose what to do with captured image. Show capture image in the main window will show the captured image immediately
  • Save captured image as a file lets you capture multiple image and save it in specified directory. It also lets you choose the file type in which image will be saved.


  • The “set as wallpaper” will let you set the currently open image as wallpaper on the desktop.


  • When you open an image file then there may be more image files in that directory. How those images will be accessed is determined here. The files in the directory may be accessed according to the sorted name, date, size and extension. You may choose not to sort by selecting No sort.


  • The “view” menu.


  • One of the important option is “Display options(windowed mode)” which decides how the image will be displayed in the window.


  • Selecting “Fit window to image” will cause irfanview window to resize every time a new image is shown. The window will try to resize to the resolution of the image. As you can see the image size is big 1920×1200. So only a part of original image can be seen.


  • Selecting “Fit images to window” will cause images to be resized every time to fit the size of irfanview window. No matter how big the image is you can see the whole image in this setting.


  • The “Show hex view” lets you see the hex representation of the image file.
