How to keep your important files/documents safe from being modified/deleted or stolen

In today’s world, your important digital documents and files  need to be protected from hackers and malware.

Hackers could steal your important files which could cause a lot of trouble for you

malware’s could encrypt your important files if you don’t keep it safe. They could also delete your important files.

This method will work for you if access your important files less frequently.

Your first line of defence is a good security software. Use good internet security softwares like Kaspersky, Bitdefender, ESET, Trend micro.

If somehow malware gets installed in the computer then your second line of defence is to keep important files separate & disconnected from the computer.

Use Pendrive to keep your important files

  • So my first suggestion is to keep your important files in an external Pendrive.
  • If possible keep two copies of important files in the pendrive.
  • Pendrives are available cheaply and are very reliable compared to hard disk
  • Don’t keep that Pendrive connected to your computer all the time.
  • Connect it to the computer when you need to access the important files. When you are done then again disconnect the Pendrive from the computer and keep it in a safe place where it is not accessible to others very easily.
  • If possible encrypt the content of Pendrive using encryption tools like BitLocker or VeraCrypt

Encrypting USB pendrive using Bitlocker

  • I am using windows 10 Bitlocker as an example. I suggest you upgrade to Windows 10.
  • Insert the USB pendrive into the computer
  • Open “Control Panel”
  • Click “Bitlocker Drive encryption”

Keep the important files on a separate partition in the hard disk

  • If you don’t want to use Pendrive for some reason then you must keep the important files on a separate partition on the hard disk. This is less secure than the previous method.
  • Create a separate partition with size that can hold all your important files. You can resize the existing partition to make space for new separate partition using free partition managers like

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition :  http://www.disk-partition.com/free-partition-manager.html

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition :  https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

  • If possible encrypt the content of the partition using encryption tools like BitLocker or VeraCrypt

  • Using AOMEI Partition manager I will resize an existing partition and then create a new partition to store important files.
